Supercharge Your Swing
Hip Rotation is the Key to Length Off the Tee
It’s not uncommon for the majority of golfers to think they need to generate clubhead speed using only their arms -- not with the lower body or hip rotation. If you want to hit the ball farther (and who doesn’t), you need to understand the importance of rotating your hips properly in the golf swing and how your hip-rotation can improve your clubhead speed. The more separation you get between your hip turn and your shoulder turn during the first half of the downswing, the more clubhead speed and power you will generate through impact.
Your hips are the strongest muscles available to you. Why not use them? With a strong trunk rotation, the shoulders, arms, hands and clubhead will follow. This creates a slinging effect with the hips leading the way, and the trailing clubhead literally flying to catch up. This same motion is used by baseball pitchers. The body leads the way with the throwing arm to follow.
Touring pros, Tiger Woods, John B. Holmes, Bubba Watson, and Vijay Singh to mention a few, initiate the downswing with extremely fast hip rotation. And we know how long they can smack it. The pros have their hips 45% open at impact. The amateurs only 10-20%.
Here are some tips to think of when turning the hips more through impact:
· Fire the right knee toward the ball
· Turn your right pocket to the ball as soon as possible
· Hit the ball with the right hip
It is important for the hips to turn in a circle -- don’t sway or slide to the left which can block your arms and hands from releasing. Just turn your hips.
Here’s a drill for you to get started:
Use your 9-iron and take a slow ¾ backswing, stopping at the top, now feel your right hip turning toward the ball with your upper body to follow. Feel the slinging effect of your hip turn, followed by your upper body. Practice this drill a number of times until you can feel your lower body leading the way through impact.
Focus on the above keys when you are at a practice facility. In order to use your hips properly in the swing, you need to do the motion slowly and correctly several hundred times on the range before you take it to the course. This will allow you to make solid contact with greater distance without thinking about your hips.
Remember: FIRE YOUR HIPS FOR MORE POWER.
Testimonials
Working with Ted took 5 strokes off my handicap. I am hitting the ball crisp and with more accuracy. I can actually hit a green in regulation, and am confident that the ball is going where I aim. Thanks Ted.

For an old guy (65) like me, Ted has taken my body restrictions and made them work for accuracy and with a lot less effort. I hit the ball farther just by actually swinging slower and making good contact. My chipping is superb!
